Three children were beaten, forced to eat dog feces and locked in the closets of a Maryland home for months, Maryland State Police said.

The children ages 8, 9 and 10 were assaulted with electronic control device and beaten by two women using belts and extension cords, police said.

Amanda R. Wright, 29, and her girlfriend, Besline Joseph, 25 were arrested Wednesday at their home in Mardela Springs, Maryland, and charged with multiple counts of child abuse.

Investigators said the women mostly kept the children confined to closets or the basement of their home. They also threatened the children with death if they told anyone about the abuse, police said.

Police were led to the home by a tip of suspected child abuse.

The children, who had bloody noses, bruises and cuts when officers found them, had been eating a diet of bread, oatmeal and water for at least six months, police said.

Both women are facing at least four counts of child abuse and two assault charges, police said.

They were also charged with stalking, use of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, false imprisonment and one count each of causing ingestion of a bodily fluid, officials said.

The women remained at the Wicomico County Detention Center on Thursday. Information about their legal representation was not immediately available.

Police declined to describe the relationships between the children and women.

is hard to imagine this type of abuse, and certainly even harder to imagine the motive behind it, Greg Shipley, the state police director of communications, toldWMDT.

On any given day, there a lot of hustle and bustle that takes place in Lee Hills Hall, the home of the Columbia Missourian newspaper, a publication that has served the community and the state since the University of Missouri School of Journalism first opened its doors.

Yet it is truly as sign of the times when a budding media startup shares the same building as a newspaper founded in 1908.

The site launched publicly in late July, covering business news across the state. In addition, it receives wire news and aggregates articles from various state publications such as the Kansas City Star, St. Louis Post Dispatch and business journals across the state.

Readers are able to subscribe to email updates daily and industry specific updates weekly. Additionally, the site will be launching an iPhone app in the near future. The app incorporates a 10, 15 minute sorting layout, which helps cater to the time constrained needs of the readership.

It all started when professor Randall Smith (left), founder and editor in chief of the site and the Donald W. Reynolds endowed chair in business journalism at the School of Journalism, saw a gaping void in the business coverage across the state.

saw businesses not being covered in the state. I saw business journals and major metros cutting back their business staffs, Smith said. I thought was that there was a highway so large you could drive a Mack truck down it, as far as covering the whole state business news. Students became directly involved in working on the business plan, content and design. Continuing through 2012 with the work of more students and interns, those working on the site witnessed the emergence of a digital newsroom.

On the educational side, the venture offers students a unique blend of training in journalism and in building a news organization. For many of the students, this is the first exposure they have in business journalism. Through the various programs of study offered at the Missouri School of Journalism, students are required to work in at least one of the university owned, professional newsrooms available, such as the Columbia Missourian newspaper and NBC affiliate television station KOMU 8.

I wanted to do really from the start was to start something that was akin to the Missourian, akin to KOMU, akin to KBIA, so that our students could practice business journalism in a hands on, Missouri Method format, Smith said.

Smith sees the business focused environment at Missouri Business Alert as a golden opportunity.

see so much great potential in it for students, Smith said. day I get opportunities for students to be placed at Bloomberg or at Reuters or at a Dow Jones or whatever it might be, and the thing of it is that I want to have qualified students to be able to send them. Because, to tell you the truth, the students from Missouri who have gone to those places make such a dynamic impression that they opening doors for future Missouri students.

In heading the newsroom on a daily basis, he oversees the staff of 25 to 30 reporters, editors and contributors. Business and convergence journalism classes provide most of the students present, many of whom work for the site in eight week blocks.

really enjoyed my time at SPN and got a lot out of that, and I think to a certain extent was bitten by the startup bug while there, Stacy said.

When asked about the transition to Missouri Business Alert, Stacy said, educational piece of that was really interesting to me, having worked with interns at SPN. I was interested in kind of enhancing that and working with young journalists, especially of this caliber. a veteran of a media startup himself, Stacy knows the wealth of knowledge that can be amassed in this sort of environment.

think there a lot of value in just experiencing that (a media startup) and working someplace where if you have and idea and you willing to see it through, it can become a part of the structure of the organization, Stacy said. in addition to the essentials of business journalism, (we trying to teach them the essentials of media startups. it comes to growth, Smith and Stacy see bright prospects for the future.

probably going to take our experiment and try to launch it on some other campuses because one of my goals with this is to take it to other journalism schools, Smith said. just believe this: We can graduate enough people in business journalism.

READ: O’Malley’s full statement”I recognize that Cardinal Law’s passing brings forth a wide range of emotions on the part of many people. I am particularly cognizant of all who experienced the trauma of sexual abuse by clergy, whose lives were so seriously impacted by those crimes, and their families and loved ones. To those men and women, I offer my sincere apologies for the harm they suffered, my continued prayers and my promise that the Archdiocese will support them in their effort to achieve healing,” Cardinal Sen P. O’Malley said in a statement. “As Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Law served at a time when the Church failed seriously in its responsibilities to provide pastoral care for her people, and with tragic outcomes failed to care for the children of our parish communities. I deeply regret that reality and its consequences.”In a statement, Pope Francis expressed condolences to the College of Cardinals, adding may God “who is rich in mercy” welcome him in his eternal peace.”I am indeed profoundly sorry,” he had said.In the end, he accepted the moral responsibility for the behavior of the rogue priests who ravaged his archdiocese. And he acknowledged that it was his own errors of judgment that fanned the gravest moral questions to beset his institution since the Reformation.”I wish to apologize once again for the harm done to victims of sexual abuse by priests,” he said. That atonement did not come until after much damage had been done and the weight of it all was, for him, crushing.”It’s the most difficult thing that I have ever faced in my whole life,” he said. The irony was keen for this proud and committed man, whose allegiance to the traditions and teachings of his church were so unswerving.Church pundits were hardly surprised when he was named to succeed Cardinal Medeiros in January 1984,

Uh, if in the doing of that, some would call you ‘controversial,’ then so be it.”After being sent to Boston, John Paul made him a cardinal about as swiftly as was possible. And thereafter, complete access to the innards of Vatican power and influence were ever open to Bernard Law.At his height, Law was widely regarded to be America’s most influential prelate. Nor did his efforts to atone, rectify, even apologize, register with much effect.”Becoming an object of contempt for many people the distrust, um the anger. All of that is bad enough,” he said. “But then added to that was the knowledge that Boston and I personally, have been responsible for placing upon the bishops of this country an added burden. And I apologize to them for that.”In the end, the harm that occurred under his watch may take a generation to gauge,

After Larry Brihm’s pass attempt on first down fell incomplete, the Eagles were five seconds away from heading to Greensboro with their championship dreams still alive. Five seconds, as it turned out, was more than enough time for the Wildcats. Brihm got out of the pocket and threw a bomb toward the end zone, the ball seeming to hang in the air forever. After a few tips, the ball fell into the waiting arms of Mitchell with no time remaining on the clock. The Eagles fell to the turf in disbelief, once again their dreams taken away from them, at home, by the Wildcats.

Two years ago, Bethune Cookman edged North Carolina Central 28 26 after the officials ruled that Dorrell McClain didn’t cross the goal line and the Wildcats blocked a field goal attempt on the next play. The Eagles know the feeling of celebration one second and heartbreak the next. Last season in Atlanta at The Celebration Bowl, the Eagles were one play away from tying the game after a Malcolm Bell to Quentin Atkinson touchdown made it a one point game. But the extra point was blocked, and the Eagles suffered heartbreak in Atlanta. Both of those plays were preceded by a celebration penalty. Both times Mack said that didn’t make any difference. Central dominated the game. The Eagles out gained the Wildcats (6 4, 5 2) 307 178. mulberry leather football game canceled after 5 players charged with attempted aggravated rape

GRUNDY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) Friday night Grundy County High School football game against Upperman High has been canceled.

The last minute decision comes after charges of attempted aggravated rape were leveled Thursday against 5 football players. The boys are accused of attacking a freshman on the team.

They were able to enter through an open door to the school field house. One of the five recorded the assault on a cell phone. Five of them are charged with attempted aggravated rape. Additional charges are possible.

“This investigation is disturbing but we want to be as transparent as we can be about it,” the sheriff said.

“This is Grundy County and this is home and you think things like this aren’t supposed to happen at the house, but we are dealing with this,” Sherriff Shrum said.

Sheriff Shrum said the other two football players were not in the room at the time. They do not face any charges.

The five accused in the case are all due in court on Monday morning. None of their identities have been released.

The team’s head football coach has also been suspended, but the school investigation is separate from the criminal one.

The Department of Children’s Services is also investigating.

TORONTOFormer Toronto Maple Leafs player Mike Zigomanis has scored a $162,500 judgment against Frank D because the southern Ontario beverage entrepreneur improperly cut his promotional contract after a nude photo scandal.

D hired Zigomanis in May 2011 to promote his energy drink Cheetah Power Surge for $200,000 over two years. website where former lovers could post nude images of their exes.

D asserted Zigomanis function as a brand ambassador for Cheetah because the scandal triggered a morals clause that voided the remainder of the contract.

Justice David Stinson disagreed, and on Monday awarded the former Leaf the balance of the contract, $162,500, plus pre judgment interest and costs.

Both Zigomanis and Leafs officials initially denied the photos were him, but the former player, now 35, admitted he lied to the club and media in December 2011.

He told the trial he had taken the photos and sent them to his girlfriend at the end of 2010 or early 2011.

Stinson ruled that consenting adults to communicate in such a fashion, with an expectation of privacy, would not, in my view, be likely to shock, insult or offend the community or ridicule public morals or decency.

Internet posting of the nude photos was not the action of Mr. Zigomanis, but instead was carried out by someone else. It was done without Mr. Zigomanis knowledge or consent.

the Internet posting wasn an act committed by Zigomanis and the (morals) clause was therefore not triggered, Stinson wrote.

Sending nude photos of himself to his lover doesn qualify as shocking, Stinson noted.

private communication of intimate information is a fact of life that is not a new phenomenon, the judge wrote. letters (and) photographs containing intimate information have been exchanged between individuals for centuries in the expectation that they would remain private between sender and recipient. dropped the contract of a second Leafs player, Luka Caputi, on the same date, citing Caputi trade from the Maple Leafs organization as reason for ending the contract. Caputi was never involved in a nude photo scandal.

fact that D chose to terminate both athletes contracts suggest the decision was motivated by other factors apart from the ones recited in the letters, wrote Stinson.

The judge also cited Zigomanis participation the filming of a TV commercial, which D aired for many months.
