IN HER brand new art space, artist Judy Gittelsohn prepares four workstations of pushed together desks for the arrival of about 10 developmentally challenged children.

At each workstation, she has placed a plant sprout in a cup, her outline drawing of the plant divided into six panels and neatly filled palates of colored paint. The children will paint one square each in this composite picture that Gittelsohn likens to quilting. “It’s about the cycle of life,” she explains, just before the children arrive in a flurry of activity.

With two aids in tow, they chatter, sit, stand, explore, sit as Gittelsohn explains the objective through the din. Colors flow; paints, papers, brushes are in disarray, and it’s over in a matter of minutes. Watching the kids interact with the project at hand, you see moments of intense concentration, of delight, of being engrossed in the hand to eye experience the majority of these moments are measured in seconds, split seconds.

Gittelsohn is not disappointed. Surveying the finished paintings, she marvels at the unique personality each student has contributed. “Just like a thumb print,” Gittelsohn comments, “our marks application of paint, marker, pencil, chalk precisely our own. Amazing.”

The miracle of Judy Gittelsohn is fluidity. An award winning painter with an architectural background, Gittelsohn provides a structured (often elaborately so) template, then she lets go, come what may. Once a finished product is in front of her, goal orientation shifts to “What can we make of this”?

The groups Gittelsohn teaches youth, developmentally challenged children, adults recovering from illness or injury all overcome huge hurdles to paint.

One of her students was a highly paid professional before he fell ill and lost his career to debilitating seizures. “He wanted to draw with perspective, but he couldn’t get his mind around it.” Gittelsohn recalls his breakthrough moment. “I said look at the corners of the room and see if they are an ‘A’ or a ‘V.'” He got it. And she still remembers “watching him smile and begin to rework his brain.”

In the case of illnesses, she points out, sometimes it’s just a question of helping the brain to approach old tasks (“something difficult that used to be familiar”) in new ways.

In her at risk youth program, Gittelsohn devised a project for young girls from East Palo Alto to interview and then paint important women in their community. She compiled the paintings in a booklet simply called A Book About Women by Girls and has saved up nearly half the money needed to print 1,000 copies of the books. She believes that it is important for these artists and their contributions to be part of the community at large.

These artists’ proud sense of accomplishment is the reason Gittelsohn plans to celebrate the new space and gallery for her “Art for Well Beings” programs (thanks to support from Early Learning Institute president Charles D. Bernstein) with a grand opening and all inclusive art exhibit (May 6, 3 5pm).

The work of Gittelsohn’s students can be seen around the South Bay, and at least one of her developmentally challenged adult proteges, Mike Jennings, has sold a number of paintings. With several paintings on exhibit at “Art for Well Beings,” Jennings’ youthful style captures an essence of raw delight. Gittelsohn says he always greets her the same way: “‘You are Judy and I like art really like art.'”

When the 22nd season of “Antiques Roadshow” premieres Monday, the popular PBS show will feature a marathon day of appraisals done in Harrisburg.

The show’s staff is unwilling to share too many details in advance, but the episode will include residents of Columbia, East Petersburg, Lancaster, Lititz and New Holland. They are among the nearly 5,000 people who went to the Farm Show in June to discover whether they were the owners of a real treasure.

Looking back at the episodes featuring artifacts brought to the show during the Harrisburg stop, Marsha Bemko, the show’s executive producer, struggled to pick out a few items to talk about.

“So many good things,” she says. “This was a great city. There’s a reason it’s first.”

The Harrisburg appraisals are featured in three separate episodes, including Monday’s. The others will air Jan. 15 and Jan. 22.

For the latest season of “Antiques Roadshow,” the crew from WGBH Boston also traveled to Portland, Oregon; Green Bay, Wisconsin; St. Louis; New Orleans; and Newport, Rhode Island. When planning a new season, the show looks for new cities as well as past favorites.

“Harrisburg was such a good city that it’s going to be our season premiere in January, which says a lot about the material we captured,” Bemko says.

A ‘chocolate pot’The season opens with a woman telling the backstory of a “chocolate pot” that belonged to her husband’s grandfather.

“She tells the story of how he would hide it if any handyman or anyone would come to the house,” Bemko says. “He didn’t want that person coming back and walking off with it. He knew it was a good thing.”

The tinware pot was made around 1880 and is painted with toile flowers in primary colors. The family called it a chocolate pot and passed it down through the generations.

Watch: Video of the ‘chocolate pot’ appraisalAppraiser Kelly Wright of Freeman’s in Philadelphia called it a great example of Pennsylvania Dutch tinware. Seeing the bright colors on this pot are an exciting find, Wright says in the episode, because black is the most common color. He priced the painted coffee pot at $7,000 to $9,000.

“Are you kidding?” the stunned woman says in the episode. “Never in a million years would I have thought that.”

“No wonder he hid it away,” Bemko tells LNP. He escaped three times and attempted even more escapes.

For one escape attempt, from Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary, he collected material from the prison dentist and made a lifelike head.

“The man had talent. It really is a good head. It has hair on it,” Bemko says. “He made a hand, too, so he could put the head and the hand on the bed and . escape. He was not successful.”

A prison warden kept the head. His grandson brought it to be appraised in Harrisburg. The expert estimated the head is worth $2,500 to $3,500.

“You’ve got to laugh at this a little bit. ‘Roadshow’ has a head in a box,” Bemko says. “We’ve had busts and things like that. Staff received photos of more than 1,000 pieces and picked fewer than a dozen for the show.

One furniture set was made by George Nakashima, a world renowned woodworker popular for his work in the American craft movement.

The woman who loaned the furniture said her parents bought a set of chairs in the 1970s from Nakashima’s studio in New Hope, Bucks County. Her parents paid $100 and $150 for the chairs. She returned in the 1990s and bought a table from Nakashima’s daughter for $5,000.

“There we have two generations of buyers buying from two generations of makers,” Bemko says.

The table and chairs combined were appraised by the show at $13,000 to $17,000.

NASA nurseA woman brought in artifacts from an aunt who worked at NASA and started the first aerospace nurse course.

The aunt, Pearl Tucker, worked with astronauts in the 1960s and saved photos of Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, plus other items like the astronauts’ menus.

When there were tragedies, like the Apollo 1 disaster, Tucker would help with the autopsies, Bemko says.

so you’re saying my threadbare wreath over the garage isn’t enough?
And rather than technology helping to avoid the slaughtering of the English language, I reckon quick fire Gen Y texts, sloppily spelled websites and emails are only exacerbating the problem. Two and a half years ago I was struck by a drunk driver on my way home from a family outing. I had several broken bones, multiple ligament and tendon tears, and serious injuries to every extremity on my body, including my neck and spinal cord. Recovery has not been an easy road, but what I was totally unprepared for was the boredom that comes with being nearly completely immobilized. The year before I had built two raised beds and a small greenhouse, and it was already planted and waiting for me when I came home from the hospital. I discovered very quickly that simply getting to my garden posed challenges (at one point I had to call a neighbour to get my power wheelchair unstuck), so I asked for funding to build a ramp to my garden so I could continue to participate in an activity that I enjoyed so much. I was informed that funding was only available to make the inside of my house accessible, and that gardening was not a part of my rehabilitation. Luckily, thanks to my friends, family, and community, I was able to grow a beautiful garden despite the challenges I faced, and I can tell you first hand, that gardening was and is the very foundation of my personal rehabilitation program. This spring, I was determined to increase the size of my garden, but reality set in when I started to inquire about having soil trucked into our fairly remote and rocky Kootenay location. Faced with the expense and labour required to build raised beds, I decided to include a straw bale garden in my plan, and had 20 bales delivered. As it turns out, straw is a perfect medium to grow almost anything once it is conditioned properly. It is sterile, requires no weeding, less fertilization than the same plants grown in soil, and growing right in the bales creates raised beds without having to construct boxes. Straw bales can be used on any type of ground, and there is no site prep required. There is no doubt in my mind that we can all benefit from growing a garden, but for people who live with challenging physical health problems, gardening can have extremely positive effects. Gardening can increase levels of physical activity, reduce physical pain and the need for medications, help people cope with severe medical conditions, contribute to improved social connections, reduce stress, combat depression, and of course aid in developing healthier eating habits which also contributes to quicker recoveries from injuries and surgery. This year we are conducting a pilot project and sponsoring two gardens for people both primarily confined to wheelchairs, one in Pass Creek, and one in Rossland. The volunteer support has been overwhelming, and there is a real desire for people to learn this way of gardening. My hope is that by next year the gardens will become classrooms, and our participants will become the teachers. We are currently self funded, but we are looking for help to raise money to pay for soaker hoses, water timers, t posts and fertilizer by spring. We are selling T shirts and hoodies to make this possible, with 100% of proceeds going towards building gardens for people with disabilities.´╗┐healing are available after losing a loved oneContinental breakfast served after session.
